Bakari Royals Shoot for the Stars

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 - 6:22 PM

The Royals District is again seeking to dip its toe in the multicultural space with the delivery of the Bakari Royals program at Britannia Reserve. The program, which is designed to increase the number of boys from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds playing junior football, starts on the 30th July and wraps up on the 3rd September.

Royals District staff is scheduling a series of Freo House Footy sessions at selected secondary schools in the Royals District including Aranmore Catholic College to drive the development of a CaLD development squad now known as the Bakari Royals. Bakari is Sudanese for ‘promising’, which epitomises the philosophy behind the Bakari Royals.

The Royals District is engaging boys aged 13 to 17 from countries as diverse as Afghanistan and Sudan. Royals District Participation Officer, Corey Ranger hopes the program will produce the next generation of East Perth FC stars and also play a part in supporting the boys to achieve off-field success.

The scene has been set at Britannia Reserve on Thursdays between 4pm and 5pm with Royals District and East Perth FC staff teaming up to provide the next batch of Bakari Royals with specialist coaching services aimed at exposing CaLD communities to pathways in the East Perth Junior Competition and WAFL Development Squads.

But, Britannia Reserve is merely scratching the surface on the unlimited potential of the Bakari Royals program, with discussions now starting in the suburbs of Ellenbrook and Mirabooka to expand the scope of the Bakari Royals program in the Royals District.
